Description

The Cardiac Examination Training is an immersive, competency-based learning module designed to teach learners the principles and practical steps of performing a structured cardiac examination. It provides a safe, controlled environment for developing both cognitive understanding and psychomotor skills through guided, interactive practice. The module emphasizes the integration of observation, palpation, and auscultation — key clinical techniques for assessing cardiac function — while also reinforcing foundational standards in patient safety, infection control, and clinical communication.

Learners begin in “Learn Mode,” where they receive step-by-step instruction enhanced by visual, auditory, and tactile feedback that would not typically be possible in live clinical settings. This includes insights into what clinicians should see, hear, and feel during examination, helping them to build diagnostic reasoning through experience. The training also familiarizes users with the use of examination tools such as pulse oximeters, blood pressure cuffs, infrared thermometers, and stethoscopes, with an emphasis on correct technique, positioning, and interpretation of findings.

The simulation follows the complete sequence of a cardiac assessment — from initial patient inspection and vital signs collection to detailed examination of the neck vessels, jugular venous pressure, precordium, and heart sounds. Throughout, learners are encouraged to apply clinical judgment, respond to prompts, and record observations as they would in a real-world consultation. By the end, participants demonstrate competence in both technical skills and clinical reasoning, preparing them to perform confident, accurate cardiac assessments in live clinical environments.

Learning objectives

  • Prepare the environment and patient for a safe, effective cardiac exam.
  • Accurately inspect, palpate, and auscultate the neck and chest to identify normal and abnormal cardiac findings.
  • Measure and interpret vital signs in relation to cardiovascular function.
  • Perform a systematic assessment of carotid, jugular, and precordial areas using correct clinical technique.
  • Differentiate normal heart sounds from pathological murmurs and variations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, communication, and adherence to clinical safety protocols throughout the procedure.
